I have been searching for a lock box for my vehicle for several months now. My need is simple- have a quick-access ruggedly-built lock box to secure my concealed carry firearm when leaving it behind. When I leave the gun, I also leave the holster and need an interior compartment large enough for it to fit, along with several spare magazines. I also wanted a rather discreet appearing box that didn't scream "I'm a safe- there must be something here worth stealing". This Stack-On QAS-1000 seemed to fill the bill on all counts.
It's relatively heavy- not Fort Knox, but strong enough to keep some creep busy for quite a while trying to pry it out of the vehicle. I chose to bolt it to the floor with the included lag bolts. This was the proverbial Royal Pain but well worth the effort. I had to remove the screws which secure the electronics/lock-mechanism tray, and take it out so I could get my hands inside to tighten the rear bolts (metric of course). After plugging the board back in and reinstalling the electronics/lock-mechanism tray, it didn't want to open (apparently the cam which releases the latch wasn't cycling completely). I removed one of the batteries for a minute (allowing it to reset?) and that seemed to do it.
The safe is black- as "invisible" as possible. I put black electrical tape over the shiny silver key lock to black it out and keep dirt out of the lock. It remains to be seen how the batteries will hold up and if the extreme cold will effect them.
